USA Student Visa Process
Step 1: Apply and Gain Admission to a SEVP-approved Institution
- Research and apply to SEVP-approved academic institutions in the USA.
- Receive an acceptance letter (Form I-20) from the institution upon admission.
Step 2: Pay the SEVIS Fee
- Visit the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) website and pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
- Keep the payment receipt for visa application.
Step 3: Gather Required Documents
- Form DS-160: Complete the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application form (DS-160) and print the confirmation page with the barcode.
- Passport: Valid passport with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the USA.
- Form I-20: Original Form I-20 issued by the SEVP-approved institution.
- SEVIS Fee Payment Receipt: Proof of SEVIS fee payment.
- Financial Documents: Proof of financial ability to cover tuition, living expenses, and return transportation.
- Academic Documents: Transcripts, diplomas, standardized test scores (e.g., SAT, ACT), and any other relevant academic records.
- Supporting Documents: Any additional documents required by the U.S. embassy or consulate, such as proof of ties to your home country.
Step 4: Schedule and Attend Visa Interview
- Complete the DS-160 form and schedule a visa interview at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
- Pay the visa application fee.
- Attend the visa interview with all required documents, including the Form I-20 and financial documents.
- Be prepared to answer questions about your academic plans, financial status, and ties to your home country.
Step 5: Visa Processing
- The consular officer will review your application and conduct the visa interview.
- If approved, your passport will be stamped with the F-1 visa.
- Some applicants may require additional administrative processing, which can delay the visa issuance.
Step 6: Travel to the USA
- Once you receive your visa, make travel arrangements to the USA.
- Arrive at the port of entry in the USA with your passport, Form I-20, and visa documents.
Step 7: Maintain Status in the USA
- Attend the institution listed on your Form I-20 and maintain full-time enrollment.
- Comply with all visa regulations, including restrictions on employment and duration of stay.
- Keep your Form I-20 valid by following the guidelines provided by the institution’s designated school official (DSO).
Step 8: Renew or Extend Visa (if necessary)
- If you need to extend your stay or renew your visa, work with your institution’s DSO to complete the necessary paperwork and procedures.
